How Dental veneers work?

Dental veneers basically transform your slightly crooked, chipped, or stained teeth to aligned, pearl-white, flawless teeth of celebrities. Veneers are applied to the front surface of the teeth concealing any imperfection. If performed by a qualified dentist, teeth veneers can last permanently and look as if they are your own.

Veneers can be made of either porcelain or resin composite. Porcelain veneers are more stain-resistant and natural-looking. They will, however, cost far more than resin composite veneers.

Your initial visit to the dentist involves discussing your expectations with the doctor. He or she is likely to evaluate the overall state of your teeth and jaw. Then, the dentist makes impressions/models of your teeth to be used during the production of the veneers. Creating the actual veneers could take something between a few days to a week. After that, you visit the dentist for the main procedure.

The main procedure involves 4 steps:

  1. The dentist trims a portion of the tooth structure. Normally, this grinding wouldn't be more than 1 to 2 millimeters and will be replaced by the veneer. In the cases that veneers are used for correcting misalignment, more trimming might be required.
  2. The surface of your tooth will be cleaned and polished to be ready for veneers placement.
  3. The dentist tries the veneer on your tooth and makes some alterations as needed. Then, he or she will apply a special cement to the veneer and place it on the front surface of the tooth.
  4. In the final step, the doctor uses a particular beam of light on the dental veneers. The light activates the cement chemicals and help harden or curve the veneer.

During the procedure, you will probably be put under sedation. Post-op pain and discomfort after dental veneers can be soothed using OTC medications. The procedure is an outpatient one meaning you won't need to stay at the hospital afterward.

Should I get veneers?

If you want to look at your pictures and see the celebrity smile on your face, you should consider getting dental veneers. Dental veneers benefit you in many ways:

  • You will have gorgeous and natural-looking teeth.
  • You can take care of them like the way you look after your own teeth.
  • Porcelain veneers are tolerated by your gum and are stain resistant.
  • It is less intrusive than any other dental restoration surgery.

As with any other procedure, dental veneers involve some disadvantages that you might want to consider before visiting your dentist:

  • It’s an irreversible procedure. Once the veneers are placed, they cannot be removed.
  • They are costly
  • They are strong but brittle and could get cracked or chipped in case of severe trauma.
  • Veneers cannot be repaired. They can only be replaced by a new veneer.
  • People with clenching and grinding habits are not considered good candidates for veneers.

Veneers or Crowns?

As two very similar dental restoration procedures, dental veneers and crowns have a number of differences. Learning about these differences can help you choose the type of procedure that is tailored to your needs.

  • With dental veneers, only the front surface of the tooth is removed. Whereas, dental crowns procedure requires removing 60% to 75% of the tooth.
  • Crowns are more durable and resistant to cracking.
  • Veneers can improve the appearance of your smile when the teeth issues are not severe. For more fundamental issues, crowns are a better option.
  • Veneers only cover the front surface of the tooth excluding edges. But crowns can cover the whole tooth.
  • In rare cases, Veneers might need replacement after about 10 years. Crowns are mainly permanent.

Dental veneers Recovery tips and after care

After a dental veneer procedure, you can get back to work in a day. You shouldn't feel any kind of intolerable pain. You can also eat your favorite foods right away. Within a week, any potential redness and soreness of your gums will be gone as well.

You can continue to look after your oral hygiene just as you did before the procedure.

  • Brush your teeth using nonabrasive toothpaste at least twice a day.
  • Floss at least once a day to keep the germs away from your teeth, gums, and veneers.
  • Use a mouthwash that does not include alcohol. Excessive exposure to alcohol can soften the bonding agent and damage your veneers.
