What is Lasik Eye Surgery?

Lasik eye surgery is a corrective eye surgery that reshapes the cornea (the clear front layer of the eye) and enhances how the eye focuses light rays onto the retina. The surgery has a 90% success rate and is the safest method among most common vision correction surgeries.

Lasik eye surgery results can be observed on the same day after the surgery meeting 20/20 vision. The procedure is a corrective eye surgery that addresses:

  • Nearsightedness (myopia)
  • Farsightedness (hyperopia)
  • Astigmatism

During the surgery, you will be put under local anesthesia using numbing eye drops. You won't feel any pain or discomfort but experiencing some pressure on your eyes is considered normal. You might hear some clicking sounds as well. The procedure takes about 1-2 hours and is an outpatient one.

LASIK is primarily a procedure to correct the eyesight conditions but there are certain symptoms that can be improved after the surgery too.

  • Dry eye
  • Glare
  • Halo
  • Starbursts

Can I have LASIK?

According to American society for contract and refractive surgeries, [میلاد1]LASIK surgery is the safest type of eye correction procedure carried out all over the world. Yet, you should make sure you are the right candidate.

  • You should be at least 18-21 years old.
  • You shouldn’t be pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Your cornea should be thick enough.
  • Your prescription for glasses or contacts should be stable for at least two years.
  • Your eyes must be healthy and your general health should be good. LASIK is not recommended for patients with diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, glaucoma, herpes infections of the eye, cataracts, disorders of the cornea, and retinal disease.
  • If you’ve had problems with dry eye, from wearing contact lenses, taking certain medications, or some other reason, talk to your eye doctor about how it could impact LASIK.
  • You should have reasonable expectations.

How does LASIK correct astigmatism?

Lasik reshapes and corrects the cornea to treat astigmatism. With most sight-related eye conditions including astigmatism, the light is bent incorrectly and focused elsewhere. As a result, a person's vision can be affected. Astigmatism causes blurred eyesight and difficulty with night vision.

Night vision

The complications of astigmatism usually worsen at nights and in low light. People with night vision problems have difficulty driving because they are prone to experiencing halos and glare.

Glasses and contact lenses bend the light to make it focus correctly; LASIK corrects the condition by reshaping the cornea itself. Most people have astigmatism to some extent. Lasik can treat even higher degrees of astigmatism but the cost could vary too.

Do I need to wear glasses after Lasik Surgery?

Although you are not going to experience the same haziness and blurry vision you had previously, you might feel like you need glasses after a while. Wearing contact lenses might be difficult due to the cornea that has been reshaped.

People who experience farsightedness due to getting older, are more likely to get back to reading glasses; Because their vision changes at a faster rate than someone whose condition is not due to age.

In most cases, the degree of decline in vision after the surgery will be subtle if any. But you can consult with an ophthalmologist and he/she may suggest retreatment which is a secondary LASIK surgery or other refractive operations.

What You Need to Do Before Lasik surgery in Iran

Before farewelling your glasses, you should make sure you are absolutely prepared for the LASIK eye surgery procedure.

  • If you are planning to undergo Lasik in Iran, you should stop wearing contact lenses for several weeks before the surgery. Contact lenses temporarily alter the shape of the cornea and can affect the LASIK surgery outcome.
  • Have a thorough eye exam at the doctor's office. An eye exam involves evaluating the cornea, pupil size and looking for refractive errors. You may also be screened for dry eye. A complete eye exam takes about 1 to 2 hours and gives the surgeon crucial information about your eye's conditions.
  • Buy yourself a pair of high-quality sunglasses. Your eyes will be sensitive for days after the surgery and you should protect them from damaging light rays.

Lasik surgery post-op recovery Tips and Aftercare

You may experience itching and burning sensation for some time after the surgery. The discomfort could take 3 days to two weeks. In the initial days after the surgery, blurry vision and haziness are normal.

  • The clinic will provide you with protective goggles or eye shields which you should wear immediately after the surgery.
  • Do not rub your eyes.
  • Apply eye drops prescribed by your doctor for at least 2 months after the surgery.
  • Get plenty of rest for at least a day following the surgery.
  • Avoid applying any makeup on your eyes for four months.

After the surgery, you may need to stay at the hospital for a day or two. But in most cases, there is no need for hospitalization.

A couple of days after the surgery, you will have check-up visit with the doctor. He or she will check your visual acuity in this session.

You can get back to your country 3-5 days after the surgery but you should wait at least a week before engaging in any strenuous activity or sports.
