The bitter but inevitable truth is that our body gets older every day and after the age of 40, we no longer can detect the younger version of ourselves in the mirror. But, thanks to science and technology, we've got the chance to have firm, glowing, and elastic skin once again. Only by looking at the face lift before and after photos, we can see how successful the surgery could be.

What is Facelift surgery?

Face lift surgery gives you a youthful appearance with more enhanced facial features. The face lift procedure essentially involves tightening the layer of muscle and tissue beneath the skin to pull the skin back. As a result, you get to have a glowing, firm skin. Despite what the literal translation of its name suggests (wrinkle-removal), rhytidectomy does not necessarily remove wrinkles. Wrinkles are removed by resurfacing procedures like peeling or LASER treatment. Face lift helps your skin boost elasticity and puts an end to saggy skin. Since rhytidectomy is a quite invasive method, some other techniques such as face lift tape or face lift creams are introduced too. However, no method has been as effective and long-lasting as a facelift.

A face lift can be performed in conjunction with other lift surgeries such as neck lift and forehead lift. Neck lift surgery is extremely effective for fighting double chin and removing the loose skin beneath the jawline. A forehead lift is another type of lift surgery that can be performed optionally along with face lift surgery to provide an optimal outcome. Procedures like blepharoplasty can also be performed with this surgery to remove the hooding appearance above the eyes.

How face lift procedure is done?

Face lift surgery starts with putting you under general anesthesia. A qualified surgeon takes his time and marks the areas that need incisions. By doing so, he maps the procedure beforehand. The incisions are made along the hairline and the crease lines around your ear. If face lift and neck lift are going to be performed at the same time, an additional small incision is made under the chin area. Through these incisions, the surgeon will perform the surgery. He pulls back the muscle and the connective tissue beneath your skin to tighten the face. Then, he secures the tissue to the bone behind and in front of the ear. The incision is then closed by using sutures or staples. The excess skin is usually trimmed at this point. The optional neck lifting involves stitching the underlying muscles together.

Mini Facelift

Mini face lift is a less invasive technique of lifting and rejuvenating the face. The procedure involves smaller incisions and usually does not have additional forehead or neck lift. Although this procedure has less dramatic outcomes which do not last long, it has some advantages compared to full face surgery.

  • Quicker recovery time (3 to 5 days)
  • Less pain
  • Can be performed by sedation or local anesthesia
  • More affordable

Thread Lift

In the thread lift method, the surgeon uses temporary sutures to create a slightly lifted appearance for the face. He or she stitches up some portions of the skin and tightens the tissues. Thread lift has several advantages:

  • Provokes the skin to produce more collagen
  • Lower risk of complication
  • Almost no recovery time
  • More affordable

Ultrasound lift

Ultrasound lift is a needle and incision-free face lift alternative. In this method, ultrasound technology assists the doctor to encourage collagen production in the skin and provide a firmer and tighter skin appearance. The best candidates for ultrasound lift are people in their thirties who have mild to moderate skin elasticity.

No-operation alternatives: Botox and filler

These two procedures can be performed separately or in conjunction with each other. In filler procedure, the physician injects some special substances (mainly hyaluronic acids) into the lines and folds of the skin. Botox is the injection of botulinum toxin into the skin to temporarily paralyze the muscle underneath the skin. This leads to smoother skin and fewer wrinkles around the eyes and forehead. The bad news is that Botox does not treat sagging skin and the result lasts about three months. The pros of Botox are:

  • Minimally invasive
  • Cost-effective
  • No recovery needed
  • Is performed in under 15 minutes

How do facelift scars look like?

Facelift incisions begin in the hairline and on the temporal area, continuing in front of the ear, and up to the area behind the ear cartilage. These incisions and the sutures are red in the few days after the surgery but the color will fade away gradually. All incisions leave scars to some extent; some heal better and some don't. Plastic surgeons who have more expertise and experience can make incisions that are concealed in the hairline and around the ear.

With that being said, the main factor that determines the visibility of your scars is how they are cared for after the surgery. You should religiously follow the post-op tips your surgeon suggests. Every main surgery with incisions involves some do's to reduce the chances of scarring and keloids occurring.

  • Stop smoking for at least 3 weeks before the surgery
  • Eat a face lift diet that is enriched with protein
  • Clean the incision lines
  • Use anti-scar creams

Should I get a facelift?

Who doesn't like a youthful looking face? There are few restrictions to undergoing a face lift surgery and if you wish for a tightened skin, a facelift is an effective option with almost no complications. Face lift surgery enhances your facial contour, restores loose skin, and tightens the muscles on your face. Basically, rhytidectomy is an ideal procedure for men and women over 40. If you are in your 30s and are unsatisfied with how your skin looks, you can try other less invasive procedures. A candidate for a facelift should be in a healthy physical state and have realistic expectations about the results of the surgery.

What you need to do before Facelift

As with most surgeries, successful rhytidectomy surgery requires taking precautions long before the day of the surgery. Sticking to the pre-op instructions will reduce any risk or complication after the surgery while providing an appealing result. The following tips will help you prepare efficiently for face lift surgery.

  • Get lab-testing and necessary examinations
  • Avoid taking blood-thinning medications (anti-inflammatory drugs, food supplements, etc.)
  • Quit smoking or consuming alcohol for at least 3-4 weeks before the surgery.
  • Arrange for someone to drive you to your place of residence on the day of the surgery.

Face lift recovery tips

After the face lift surgery, your younger-looking, glamourous skin is bandaged for a few days and a fluid drainage tube may be attached under your skin. Get plenty of rest and follow the instructions your plastic surgeon suggests. Your sutures will be removed in 7 to 10 days and you will be fully recovered after 4-5 weeks. You may be able to fly back home in a week depending on your case. Rhytidectomy may lead to pain, discomfort, or scarring. The better you look after the incisions, the more successful the results will be.

  • Sleep on your back with your head more elevated than normal
  • Walk every now and then to encourage blood circulation under the skin
  • Clean the sutures with a solution consisting of half hydrogen peroxide and half water.
  • Take shower with tepid water, 48 hours after the surgery.
  • Use cold compresses to manage the pain
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure
  • Limit your head movements as it might hinder the incisions’ healing
